"Plant your love and let it grow Let it grow, let it grow Let it blossom, let it flow In the sun, the rain, the snow Love is lovely. Let it grow." -E. Clapton
Hello! I am Jane and I want to take this opportunity to introduce myself. I have been married to Rick, my best friend, for 28 years. We have been blessed with two terrific children, Evan age 26 (8 lb. 6 oz. at birth) and Amy age 24 (11 lbs. 3 oz. at birth). Both of our children were born at home. I know birth intimately from three perspectives: as a mother, as a labor and delivery nurse, and as a midwife. I have experienced first-hand what a difference information and a sense of control can make when you are having a baby. The home birth of my first child was such an empowering experience. It was among the hardest, most rewarding work I have ever done. I was moved to share how wonderful birth can be. I wanted expectant families to know that they have the power to make choices in childbirth, and that pregnancy and birth are normal processes; not mysterious or scary events to be "delivered from."
I became a Certified Childbirth Educator in the Bradley Method. In an effort to be the best childbirth instructor I could be, I began attending births with my midwife. The more births I attended, the more my passion grew for helping women birth naturally. I was first documented by the state of Texas to practice as a midwife on April 24, 1987. I am a retired La Leche League Leader, a Certified Professional Midwife by the North American Registry of Midwives, a former member of the Texas Department of Health Midwifery Board, and I have a bachelors of science degree in registered nursing from Carson-Newman College. I have worked as a staff nurse in Ben Taub hospital's very busy birthing unit and I still work as a labor and delivery nurse several days a month at West Houston Medical Center.
It is a privilege for me to facilitate the childbirth process and to enhance the best possible outcome for women and their newborns. I am so grateful for the opportunity to serve in this way. I have been midwife to over 950 women, held hundreds of tiny little babies and have made many long-lasting friendships. I can honestly say after 23 years of being a midwife, I still feel the passion!
