Why am I a midwife ?

"A woman in harmony with her spirit is like a river flowing.  She goes where she will without pretense and arrives at her destination, prepared to be herself and only herself."  -M.Angelou

32 weeks and countingYou must take responsibility for your home birth during your pregnancy to achieve the best outcome.  Your best method for prevention of problems during the pregnancy and birth is attending regularly scheduled prenatal check-ups. Jane provides prenatal care.  Prenatal care consists of carefully evaluating and recording many factors: weeks of gestation, uterine growth, weight gain, blood pressure, urine, fetal heart beat, fetal position and movement, the results of standard prenatal lab work, your nutritional intake, emotional and social health, and your progress in childbirth education. You will be an active participant in monitoring your own progress.

Fiona MarieYour visits are scheduled at the following intervals to provide you and your family optimal physical, emotional and educational support:   0 to 28 weeks gestation... Every 4-week visits, 28 to 36 weeks gestation... Every 2-week visits,
36 weeks gestation to labor... Weekly visits

sleepy angelThroughout your pregnancy, labor, and birth, you and your support person(s) are an integral part of the midwifery care team.  While guidance is available to you at all times, you will be expected to assume the primary responsibility in the maintenance of your health, your baby’s health, and in creating your own personal, joyful birth experience.  You will know what is happening to you during pregnancy and birth, understand the options available, and be consulted about your preferences; not simply on the receiving end of care.

twins: Colton and NoahGood nutrition is such an important contributing factor for the best possible outcome and the prevention of complications.  When you eat poorly neither you nor baby get the nutrients for good health.  You and your developing baby are a team that shares in every food and beverage choice you make.  Women who eat well throughout their pregnancy are more likely to have a healthy baby.  Jane provides you sound nutritional guidance based on your individual food likes and dislikes.  Alternative therapies such and herbs, homeopathy and vitamin supplimets may also compliment your diet if you so desire.

ARE YOU A HOME BIRTH CANDIDATE?

Dustin and baby sister RioAre you a healthy woman with a normal medical history?

Only women with a normal medical history are eligible for care.  Women with any high-risk conditions such as smoking, heart disease, lupus,  severe anemia, high blood pressure, twins, preterm labor, abnormal fetal position for birth, such as breech will be screened out.

Are you committed to a natural, drug-free labor and birth?

Home birth mothers do not have painkillers and anesthetics available to them.  They rely exclusively on relaxation skills, massage, visualization, frequent position changes, affirmations, prayer, the touch from loved ones, showers, baths, food and drink, music, or possibly total silence to aid them with the hard work of dealing with labor.

As part of Jane’s plan to provide you with a safe birth experience, an appointment may be scheduled with a consulting physician during your pregnancy.  It will be a time for a physician to review your pregnancy and allow you to meet a physician that may assume your care should your pregnancy or birth develop a sign or symptom of a complication.

Love is a powerful anesthetic¥  Home offers women a feeling of security and comfort.  Feeling secure and comfortable is vital for the birth process to function normally.

¥  Women have the freedom to be themselves during labor and birth.  They move around freely, give birth in whatever position they feel is most comfortable, and are as vocal and spontaneous as they wish.

¥  Hospitals have routine procedures that couples seeking a natural home birth want to avoid.  They desire their birth to be intervention free and drug free.  They want to participate fully, and do not want labor and birth to be taken over by "managers".  Interventions are used only in specific situations as the need presents.

¥  Women desire to have a personal one-on-one relationship with their birth attendant.  One based on mutual respect and equality.

¥  Home birth allows families to stay together.  Other children can be present at the birth or in a room near-by.  From the moment of birth, families need not be separated.

¥  When women give birth at home they are in familiar surroundings.  Home is a place that they created; a relaxed, peaceful environment for labor and birth where family and loved ones are welcome.

BONDING AND BREASTFEEDING

safe and secure at Mommy's breastWhat can I expect immediately after the birth?

Immediately after the birth your baby will be placed on your abdomen, covered with a warm blanket and be kept with you. This is a precious time for you and your family to develop emotional bonds with your new baby. You will be encouraged to touch, examine, cuddle, admire, and love your new baby.

 What about breastfeeding?

You may choose to breastfeed immediately, if you wish. Breastfeeding is more healthful for babies than bottle-feeding, and it yields benefits for mom, too.
